Did you know that Sydney has an underwater forest? And that 70km of it is missing? We didn't! But now we do, and we're off it. In our pursuit of a happier planet, we're all about helping protect and support the environment (and ocean in particular) wherever possible. That’s why we’re supporting the legends at We Are Explorers with the Underwater Forest Project – a 2022 crowdfunding campaign to reforest Sydney’s seas.

The Underwater Forest Project

Introducing the Underwater Forest Project.

We Are Explorers have teamed up with Operation Crayweed, a band of scientists who are successfully creating crayweed forests where they once thrived, before going missing due to water pollution in the 80s, restoring vital marine habitats across Sydney’s coastline.

The goal is to raise $42,000 to fund the underwater planting of an entire crayweed site. Crayweed plots totalling 20m² are planted across a site, naturally expanding to 400m² within two years and 4000m² within six! Our efforts now will make an ocean of difference to Sydney’s underwater crayweed forests before we even reach 2030.

Wondering what the hell crayweed is and why it’s so important? Sign up for updates today to receive articles that’ll dish all the dirt on where the crayweed went and how Operation Crayweed is restoring it (hint: it involves one of our favourite dinner party conversation topics - seaweed sex).

We Are Explorers

The We Are Explorers community has a history of amazing crowdfunding work. In 2020, they helped Rewild the Snowies by planting 8,000 native trees in the Snowy Mountains, smashing the $30,000 target by $10,000! The year before that, everyone dug deep and they raised over $25,000 to Protect the Daintree by purchasing a hectare of land in the Daintree Rainforest, returning it to the Daintree Rainforest National Park so that it could be preserved forever.

This year, with your help, we’re proud to support their effort to reforest Sydney’s seas. Let’s reverse human impact, restore biodiversity to Sydney’s ocean, and create underwater forests that can be explored in our own backyard.

How do I get involved?

Donate what you can and spread the word! We want you literally SHOUTING about seaweed sex from the rooftops (not in a weird way).

For every $20 donation, one crayweed plant will be planted along Sydney’s underwater coastline.

We've created a limited edition range of tee shirts that'll go to the first 100 people who donate (amount tbc) to the cause - more info on these will be release in the coming weeks. We've also donated some of our King Beach Towels & Wetsuit dry bags as added donation incentives. Donation perks are limited so get in quick.

To be the first to donate, sign up for updates today! The We Are Explorers crew will let you know when the campaign’s live and kicking!
